Brainspotting therapy is a therapeutic process that originated from eye movement desensitization and reprocessing (EMDR) after being discovered by Dr. David Grand in 2003. Similar to EMDR, Brainspotting utilizes the visual field to help reach deeper levels of processing, access unprocessed traumas, overcome psychological roadblocks, and work through difficult emotions. Unlike EMDR, which uses side-to-side eye movements to stimulate both sides of the brain, Brainspotting therapy involves maintaining eye fixation to focus in on a specific spot of the brain, called Brainspots.

Once Brainspots have been located, Brainspotting uses somatic awareness, focused mindfulness, and close attunement from the therapist to help release stored traumas and emotional and physical distress held within the body. Brainspotting is theorized to use the body’s natural healing abilities to restore balance between mind and body.

Research has shown that Brainspotting can help access deeper areas of the brain, like the subcortical brain, where regulation and processing occur – these deeper brain areas can be difficult to reach with talk therapy alone, which can explain why it is common for people experience rapid relief and profound insights after Brainspotting.

Gottman Method Couples Therapy

The Gottman Method of Couples Therapy is based on research completed by John Gottman that began in the 1970’s and continues to this day. The research has focused on identifying and distinguishing the specific factors that when present in a relationship, can make that relationship succeed or fail. Based on this research, doctors John and Julie Gottman have created a method of therapy that emphasizes a detailed and practical approach to improving relationships.

The Gottman method is designed to help teach you specific skills and tools that can help improve friendship and intimacy in your relationship, help you manage conflict more productively, help you make progress on resolvable problems, and help you improve dialogue on gridlock or perpetual issues. The Gottman method will also help you identify and appreciate the strengths that both you and your partner bring to your relationship, and that can be used to help navigate through areas of vulnerability.

Insurance & Benefits

Is Psychotherapy covered by OHIP?

Currently, psychotherapy services aren’t covered by OHIP; however, they are covered by many private insurance plans.

Who do I contact for questions about my coverage?

We are always happy to chat and help you find answers when it comes to questions about your coverage; however, we might not have all the answers and so we recommend reaching out to your insurance provider directly if you have specific questions about your coverage plan.

Will you bill my insurance provider directly?

We do not bill insurance providers directly. We require that payment is due at the time of your session. Once payment is received, you will be provided a receipt which you can then submit to your insurance provider for reimbursement.

I do not have insurance; can I still access services?

Absolutely. At Flourish Psychotherapy we do our very best to make psychotherapy services accessible to everyone. If you have concerns about the financial aspect of therapy, we encourage you to inquire about our sliding-scale rates.

I am a student; do you provide a student discount?

We do not provide a student discount for therapy services; however, as a student, you might be covered through your educational institution. Many student health benefit plans provide some coverage for psychotherapy services. View student benefit plan information for universities in our community below.
